Chemung County Is in the southern tier of New York State. As of the 2010 census, the population was 88,830. The county seat is Elmira and the name of the county comes from a Delaware Indian village whose name meant “big horn.” Mark Twain lived and wrote for many years in the city of Elmira in Chemung County, and there are signs around the county showing where Twain lived. The county was founded on March 29, 1836.

The Correction facility is set up for 262 inmates. The facility is overseen by the Undersheriff and run by 1 major, 4 lieutenants, 4 sergeants and 60 correction officers. There are also 20 part-time correction officers and 3 full-time nurses. There are programs offered to the inmates like GED Program, parenting and religious classes plus a law library.

Chemung Corrections DivisionVisitation, Money, Mail and Calls
Visitation hours:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday
6:30 am through 1:00 pm.
Each inmate has 2 one hour visit per week. Only 2 visitors are allowed at a time.
Money will be accepted and deposited into the inmate’s account Monday through Friday between 6:30 am and 1:15 pm. You may also send money to an inmate in the form of cash, a money order or by checks approved by the Chief Administrative Officer through the mail.
Inmate’s have access to General Equivalency Diploma Programs in addition to parenting class and computer classes. There is also an Inmate Counseling Program concerning drug and alcohol and mental health.
