Broome County New York Sheriff Information

The Broome County sheriff’s department patrols a total area of 850 square miles of which 9.7 square miles is water. They protect an approximate population (2017) of 193,639. The patrol division is staffed by 38 full time sworn deputies including a captain, lieutenant and six sergeants. The department also has two K-9 officers. There are currently 2 detective sergeants, 10 detectives and 2-deputies assigned to the four units of the detective division.

Broome County, New York Jail Information

The Broome County Sheriff’s Corrections Division operates and 536 bed direct supervision facility in Binghamton, NY. The facility opened in 1996 and is fully accredited. In 2015 the facility underwent a 6.8 million dollar expansion project. Inmates are used in specific projects to support the position of the Corrections Division of the Office of the Sheriff. Inmates that have a responsibility beyond incarceration to make amends and contribute in a positive way to the community. The Corrections Division of the Office of the Sheriff continues to make efforts to meet this objective. The corrections center has a staff of 134.

Inmate visiting hours are listed on the jail website and are someone complex. All visit are contact visits unless specified otherwise. Violation of visitation rules will result in restriction of visiting privileges. There ae no visiting hours on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. All visitors are required to sing in and fill out a registration form. Valid photo identification is required.

Broome County is situated the south border (south central) of New York State. As of the 2010 census the population of Broome County was 200,600. The county seat is Binghamton. The county was named in honor of John Broome who was lieutenant governor in 1806. Broome County was established in 1806.
