Suffolk County New York Sheriff Information

The sheriff’s office patrols an area of 2,373 square miles of which 1,461 square miles is water. The office protects an estimated population (2016) of 1,492,953. There are three divisions in the Sheriff’s Office: operations, corrections, and a police division. The office currently employs over 1,200 people, including 898 corrections officers, 254 deputy sheriffs, and 130 civilian personnel. The sheriff is elected to a four-year term.

Suffolk County New York Jail Information

There are four jails in the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office System and Michael J. Franchi, Warden oversees the jail facilities. The two main jails are:

Visitation, Money, Mail, and Calls
Visitation for the Riverhead and Yaphank facilities are Tuesdays through Saturdays starting at 2:30 pm. Visiting hours are: 2:30 – 3:30 pm, 4:00 – 5:00 pm, 6:45 – 7:45 pm, and 8:15 – 9:15 pm.
Visits are scheduled by the first initial of the Inmate’s last name, and sessions are as follows:

You will need to call 24 hours in advance to arrange visits and for the current week only. You need to be 18 years old to make an appointment.

Walk-in visits are possible, depending on availability. Walk-in visitors must adhere to the schedule, however. You will need a government-issued ID.

Suffolk County, NY is a suburban county on Long Island and is the easternmost county in the state of New York. The 2010 census claimed the county’s population was 1,493,350. This population makes Suffolk the fourth most populated county in New York State. The County seat is Riverhead, but county officers are in Hauppauge. The county was named after the county of Suffolk in England and was organized in 1683.
