Albany County New York Sheriff Information

The Sheriff’s Office patrols an area of 533 square miles of which 10 square miles is water. As of 2016, the sheriff’s office protected 308,846 residents. The sheriff’s office was established in the 1660s and is one of the oldest Sheriff’s offices in the US. Currently there are 700 employees and the office is a full service law enforcement agency. Departments include patrol, criminal investigations, fire investigation, scuba unit, crime investigations, snowmobile unit, bicycle unit emergency management and K-9.

The Corrections Facility is one of the largest County Correctional Facilities in New York and has a maximum of 1,043 beds. The staff of 375 has both sworn officers and civilian employees. During the past year over 7000 prisoners were admitted to the facility and the average daily population has exceeded over 600 inmate this past year.

Albany County, New York Information

Albany County is isn the east central portion of New York State. The northern border of Albany County is the Mohawk River at its confluence with the Hudson River. At the 2010 census the population was 304,240 and the county seat is Albany. The state capital of New York State is also Albany. The county was established by the English Government in 1682 and named for Prince James, Duke of York and Albany. Albany is the oldest continuing settlement in the nation and Albany serves under its original charter.
