Bronx County, New York Jail Information

The Bronx County Correction Department is a part of the New York City Department of Corrections and a branch of the municipal government of New York City responsible for the custody of NY inmate population. The facility contained in the Bronx is the Vernon C. Bain Center, which is an 800-bed jail barge used to hold inmates for the New York City Department of Corrections. The facilities include sixteen dormitories and one hundred cells within a five-story structure.

Visitation, Money, Mail, and Calls

The first letter of the inmate’s last name denotes which days they may have visitors. Check the current visiting schedule for a list of days inmates are eligible for visits. No visiting on Mondays or Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday visitation registration happen between 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Registration for visitation on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is from 7:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Funds for an inmate’s account can be walked into the facility, over the internet, o over the phone. You will need to list the inmate’s name, booking and use number, and current location. Deposit funds over the phone through Western Union at 1-800-325-6000. Funds can be deposited via the Internet by going to NYC.gov/doc website.

Inmates can place outgoing collect calls, No call can be made to the inmate, and the staff will not accept messages for an inmate.

Bronx County, New York Information

Bronx County, NY was created as a borough of New York City in 1898 and established as a county in 1914. The name “Bronx” comes from Jonas Bronck who established the first settlement in the area in 1639. Bronx County is the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated and is the third most densely populated county in the US. Although it is densely populated, there is about a quarter of its area that is open space. These open areas are Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Zoo. The county as of 2013 is populated with 1,418,733 people.

Bronx County also contains the poorest congressional district in the US (the 15th district). The county is 57 square miles of which 15 square miles is water. The county is located next to Manhattan in the lowermost section of New York State.
